How the Age Gap Is Counted

Why Leap Years Do Not Break It

Because the gap is measured on the calendar rather than by dividing total days by 365.25, a February 29 inside the span simply becomes part of the day count. It never shifts the year figure by a fraction, which is exactly the fault that spoils rough estimates.

Common Mistakes

The usual errors are subtracting only the years, forgetting that a birthday has not yet occurred this year, and assuming the older person must be entered first. The tool removes all three by comparing the two dates directly.

Another mistake is assuming the order of the two dates matters. It does not — the calculator detects the earlier date on its own.

Reading the Result in Both Directions

An age gap is symmetric in size but not in description: the same pair can be called a three-year gap or an almost four-year gap depending on which birthdays are nearest. The calculator always reports the side that has actually been completed.
